Reasons for study:
- This has been a longstanding variety in the Duero Valley, and it was previously mixed with Albillo, for extra acidity. Old Garnacha shoots were brought in from the Navarran hillsides, most of them red, but also some white and “roya” varieties.
- Long cycle, so it adapts well to the new climate situation.
Initial conclusions:
- Fifteen years ago, this variety did not ripen in the Duero Valley’s extreme conditions. Now, the current conditions do allow it, as long as the yields are controlled.
- To control its vigour and production, leaving grass in the rows is a good way of encouraging competition.
- This is one of the leading varieties in southern Europe, because it thrives in heat, adapts well to dry climates, and, therefore, is resilient to climate change.

- This variety is highly adaptive: it is able to express, with great versatility, the qualities of the terrain where it is planted.
Tasting Notes
Aromatically intense, with all the unique character of the variety. A very clean and perfumed profile, with aromas of wild rose bush and redcurrant (lollipop), amid notes of sweet spices and white pepper. It is harmonious and refreshing on the palate, in a greatly expressive and flavoursome wine. It has notes of red and black fruits (picota cherries and tart strawberries) with a spiced finish.
Vintage
The 2021 vintage was initially marked by a lack of water in the ground. However, we managed to rectify with precision, plot by plot and row by row, during the green pruning process. The vineyard efficiently took advantage of the rare June rainfall. Furthermore, the average temperatures recorded in the summer were lower than previous years, and there were no extreme heatwaves. So, given these circumstances, the cycle was completed slowly, without any undue stress upon the vineyard. The first fortnight of September was hot, which was good for the grape ripening. The wines of this vintage are characterised by their good balance and aromatic complexity.
